Does Aetna cover rehab? Yes, most Aetna health plans cover treatment for drug and alcohol addiction and for mental health conditions. What you pay depends on your specific plan, the level of care you need and whether the program is in network. Arkview works with Aetna, and our admissions team can check your benefits at no cost.
Why most Aetna plans cover addiction treatment
Two federal rules shape coverage. The Affordable Care Act lists mental health and substance use treatment as essential health benefits for most individual and small-group plans. The federal parity law says plans that cover these services can’t limit them more strictly than medical care.
In practice, that means many Aetna plans cover treatment the same way they cover other medical care, with deductibles, copays and coinsurance. Learn more about the ACA and mental health parity in PA.
Levels of care Aetna plans often cover
Coverage usually follows medical need. A clinical assessment decides which level fits, and Aetna may review that decision. At Arkview, the levels include:
| Level of care | What it is | Where at Arkview |
|---|---|---|
| Medical detox | 24/7 physician-supervised withdrawal care | Mechanicsburg |
| Residential treatment | Live-in care with daily therapy and groups | Mechanicsburg |
| Partial hospitalization (PHP) | Full-day treatment five days a week, sleep at home | Mechanicsburg and East York |
| Intensive outpatient (IOP) | Three days a week, morning and evening tracks | Mechanicsburg and East York |

What affects your cost
Two people with Aetna can pay very different amounts. The main factors are:
- Your plan type: HMO plans may require a referral; PPO plans usually give more choice of providers.
- Network status: in-network care almost always costs less.
- Your deductible: how much you have already paid this year changes what you owe now.
- Copays and coinsurance: your share after the deductible.
- Prior authorization: Aetna often has to approve detox and residential care before or soon after admission.
