What Dual Diagnosis Treatment Involves

Dual diagnosis means a mental health condition and a substance use disorder at the same time, which is common rather than unusual. Depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and PTSD frequently sit underneath substance use, and substance use worsens all of them. Treating one and leaving the other is a well-documented relapse pattern. Integrated treatment addresses both with the same team, at the same time.

Is This For You

Is Dual Diagnosis Treatment Right for You?

You started using to manage anxiety, depression or sleep
You have been treated for substance use before and relapsed when your mental health declined
You have been treated for a mental health condition and the substance use was never addressed
Your symptoms get worse when you stop using, not better
You have been given conflicting advice by different providers
You have a trauma history alongside substance use

If more than one of these fits, treating only half the picture is why it has not held before. An assessment covers both sides. Call (717) 744-0756.

Inside the Program

A Day in Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Assessment covers both conditions at intake rather than treating one as the presenting problem. Your plan combines psychiatric medication management with substance use treatment in one schedule. Groups cover cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy skills and trauma-informed work. Individual therapy addresses how the two conditions interact for you specifically rather than as separate problems.

Your Care Continuum

Where Dual Diagnosis Treatment Fits in Your Care

Dual diagnosis is not a separate level of care, it runs through all of them. It applies in detox, residential, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient. Arkview is one of only three providers in Pennsylvania with separate dedicated facilities for mental health and substance use. That is what makes integrated treatment practical rather than theoretical.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is dual diagnosis?
A mental health condition and a substance use disorder occurring together. Roughly half of people in addiction treatment have a co-occurring mental health condition. It is common enough that treating substance use in isolation is usually the exception rather than the rule.
Which comes first, mental health or addiction treatment?
Neither. They are treated at the same time. Sequential treatment, addressing one and then the other, is associated with worse outcomes because each condition drives the other.
What mental health conditions do you treat alongside substance use?
Depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, trauma and PTSD. Intake assesses both so the plan covers what is actually present rather than the presenting complaint alone.
Do I see two different teams?
No. One clinical team holds both parts of your plan. That is the point of integrated treatment and the reason it outperforms running two programs side by side.
Is dual diagnosis treatment covered by insurance?
Generally yes, under the same behavioral health benefits. We verify your specific plan at no cost and explain any out-of-pocket amount before you commit.
Where is your Mechanicsburg campus?
