What Intensive Outpatient (IOP) Involves

Intensive outpatient provides structured group and individual treatment about three hours a day, three days a week, typically for 4 to 12 weeks. Morning and evening tracks exist so the program fits around a job or school rather than replacing it. It suits people stepping down from a higher level of care. It also suits people whose use never required residential treatment but needs more than a weekly session.

Your Care Continuum

Where Intensive Outpatient (IOP) Fits in Your Care

Intensive outpatient usually follows partial hospitalization or residential, and steps down into aftercare and the alumni program. Some people enter directly when weekly therapy is not enough. If your circumstances change, stepping back up to partial hospitalization happens on the same campus.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days a week is IOP?
Three days a week, roughly three hours per session, typically for 4 to 12 weeks. You choose a morning or evening track based on your schedule.
Can I work full-time during IOP?
Usually yes. That is what the morning and evening tracks are for. Most people in intensive outpatient are working or in school.
How is IOP different from PHP?
Intensity and hours. Partial hospitalization is roughly six hours a day, five days a week. Intensive outpatient is about three hours a day, three days a week. Partial hospitalization suits people who need daily structure, intensive outpatient suits people who need accountability around an existing routine.
Do you offer virtual IOP?
Yes. Our Virtual IOP runs the same program online and is available across Pennsylvania. It suits people with transport, childcare or scheduling barriers who are medically stable.
What happens when IOP ends?
You move into aftercare and the alumni program, with a relapse-prevention plan written before you finish. Stepping back up is available if you need it.
